One of the most famous mathematicians from Greece was Pythagoras. He is credited with the equation known as the Pythagorean Theorem which is used to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle. Another great mathematician from Greece was Plato. He is well known for having a big influence in math as he helped to show the difference between pure and applied mathematics. Part of the success of the Greeks in math came from their ability to adopt and adapt. They often adopted different theories and ideas from the places they conquered. Olympics:
One of the most famous contributions of ancient Greece is the Olympics. In ancient Greece they were a series of athletic competitions in which each state sent representatives to compete. They were originally held in honor of Zeus the god of the sky. There was a truce during the competition so that athletes could travel safely to the games. These ancient Olympics had fewer events in which only free born Greek men could compete. Like modern Olympics these games were held every four years. The ancient games; however, were different than modern Olympics because they were as much a religious event as an athletic event. For example sometime during the games they would sacrifice 100 oxen in honor of Zeus. They were also a political tool used by city states to show their dominance over each other.
