Poseidon
Poseidon, also known as Neptune is the Greek and Roman god of the sea, earthquakes and horses. Although he is considered to be one of the supreme gods on Mt. Olympus he is said to have spent most of his time in the water on Earth. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea. As such Poseidon is the brother of Hades, Hera, Zeus, Hestia, and Demeter. In addition to this Poseidon is the husband of a sea goddess named Amphitrite. Unlike many of his other relationships, in which Poseidon got along with the other major gods, Poseidon did not like Athena because Athena was chosen as the namesake of the city Athens instead of Poseidon. This came from the competition between Poseidon and Athena when they each gave a gift to the city of Athens. Poseidon gave the city a spring of salt water and Athena brought them the olive tree which they chose. He reacted to this fact by flooding the area surrounding Athens in his anger. As can be seen in his actions such as flooding the area around Athens Poseidon is known for having a bad temper and being quick to anger. Poseidon is often symbolized by the Trident (a weapon gifted to him by the Cyclopes), fish, dolphin, horse and bull. An interesting thing about Poseidon is that when he is on earth, he rides in a gold chariot lead by two white horses with gold manes and brass hooves. Finally Poseidon is said to have become the ruler of the sea when he and his brothers each picked a domain, Zeus took the heavens, Hades took the underworld, and Poseidon then took the sea which is why he became the god of the sea.
